SANTA ANNA SURRENDERS AT MEXICO CITY
Santa Anna gave up at Mexico City after a fight to the very end. Mexico was about to lose the War in setember after the Americans won three landslide victorys at Poli Asti on May 3 Buenta Vista on May 11 and at California on June 15. Prior to the battle of Poli Asti the Mexicans won at the Rio Grande to start the War on April 24 and on May 1 at Fort Texas. The Americans and Taylor then started to surrond the Mexicans during the summer to end the War. Even though it is known officialy the reason for war was the Mexican border the reason Polk approved was to take California. At that point California had been captured so Polk wanted Tyler to end the war before more troops could die and the Mexicans recaptured California. By late summer the war was ending before Santa Anna promised Talor quick surrender if he could regain Mexico. Taylor gave in and Anna replaced Mexican commander Arista and managed to defeat the Blockade. Then in late Feburary after the long winter the War resumed at Montermy. After the blockade disaster little did Polk, who was strugglingto fire General Taylor would have had another good reason to fire him.At Montermy the Americans had nearly captured the town of Montermy which would have given them free acsess to the huge city of Shiloh. However , Taylor knowing he had lost many more troops then Santa Anna thought he would be beaten
bad at Shiloh so he decided to neogotiate a tie. The Mexicans were very happy they had jipped Taylor of a possible surrender setup. Despite Taylor destroying the Mexicans in Shiloh in March, Taylor would suffer the worst defeat of the war at Texas in April. Polk replaced
Taylor with General Winfrield Scott. Despite suffering a huge defeat to Mexico at San Antonio.
Scott destroyed Santa Anna at Buenta Vista where Mexico lost 1000 men and Americans lost 200 men a year after the battle was fought. Then through late Spring the Mexicns chased Santa Anna's troops down the Rio Grande. In late summer the Mexicans had to defend they're 2nd biggest city, Puebela. The battle there was single sided as the Americans lost 400 troops to the Mexicans 1000. In early fall last month the 10,000 remaining Mexican troops defended Mexican City. The battle was close ad the Mexicans lost less troops but in the end America tookj Mexico City. Santa Anna surrendered i honor. However a war ending treaty will not be signed untill 1848.

Great info, but as we discussed, the format needs work. I talked to you about this in class and don't see any revisions.
